Wing Construction

February 1-7
More of the same I'm afraid.  My shop is woefully inadequate for coping with the winter weather, That, and I've got my winter funk on.  It will pass in a few weeks I'm sure. A few degrees warmer and I'll be back at it.

More time to study and buy tools and supplies right?

More nothing

I actually had the bug to get out to the shop today.  I spent most of my time cleaning all of the clutter I've allowed to accumulate.  God I'm a slob. It really felt good to be back out there even if it was still a bit on the cold side.  Spring is coming!
February 18-19
Sunday was another busy day.  Busy staying warm :)  Hopefully by the end of the day I'll have a bending brake in hand and will start (finally) bending my rib stiffeners.

I've got a trip planned to visit another builder.  Dave R.  is building an RV 8.  It's a nice shop, plenty of room, although I still wonder how he's going to get the plane out of his basement when the time comes ;)

Anyway, Dave was gracious enough to let me borrow his 18" bending brake.  I gladly accepted.

Monday dawned to another chilly day.  I might be smartening up in my old age.  I brought some aluminum and the required tools into my basement where the temps are in the high 60s, cleared off a section of my reloading bench, and set up the bending brake.  I've still got some questions about the bend radius and the sharpness of the brake top plate (I don't know the proper term).  The pieces look good to me, but what do I know.

I've also made another command decision.  I'm going to finish up my PP training this spring.  I'm half way through and sick of being at that point.  Damn the cost.  I've got most of what I need saved.  The rest. . . I'll figure that out later.  I just want to have that PPL with a SEL after it.

Where does the time go?   I feel like such a slacker.  Life has taken me away from the build for the moment.  I had a couple of flashes of work.  I've bent up a few more rib stiffeners.  Here's a few pictures of my current setup.  I'm using a couple of blocks of balsa glued to the back of the pan to keep the top plate indexed.  It's not high tech, but it seems to work.  The second picture is of my sub-terrainian lair.  Stone foundation and all.
back, next
